Discover the intriguing world of tessellations, those repeated geometric shapes forming fascinating patterns that so captivated Dutch graphic artist, M.C. Escher. Learn from Michael Wilson how to create designs that can fill a page with no gaps or overlaps. Afterward, visit the “M. C. Escher: Infinite Dimensions” on view in Gallery 153 and 154 and see some of his mathematically inspired and wondrous lithographs, woodcuts, and drawings.
Michael J. Wilson has been creating life-like tessellations by hand for more than 38 years. Captivated and influenced by Escher’s graphic work and designs, Wilson explores the complex interrelationships between figure and ground as well as the regular surface.
