Join Tomoko Nagakura, assistant curator for Japanese art, to discover Japan’s traditional monochrome aesthetic in a new light in the exhibition “Black and White: Japanese Modern Art.” Distinct among Japan’s diverse art sensibilities, it has its roots in Zen Buddhism which values simplicity and austerity, but gained a new meaning in the post-war period through exchanges with global artistic communities, such as American Abstract Expressionism In contrast to the other, more colorful Japanese exhibitions at the Museum this fall, this exhibition introduces modern Japanese calligraphy, prints, ceramics, and other art forms in the simplicity and power of black and white.
