The outcome of the United Kingdom referendum on EU membership sent shockwaves across the globe. The European Union has helped secure peace in Europe for the past 70 years, and it now faces an uncertain future. Added to that, Europe finds itself in the throes of what has been termed “its worst political crisis since World War II,” facing problems of immigration, a newly aggressive Russia, the fear of terrorist attacks, and a battered Euro. Unity in Europe is needed now more than ever, but the Brexit vote has underscored the complexities of integrating an extremely diverse continent. What will post-Brexit Europe look like, and how can U.S. foreign policy adapt? Come join us for a discussion on this question and many others with John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies’ Erik Jones.
Dr. Jones currently serves as Director of European and Eurasian Studies and Professor of European Studies and International Political Economy at John Hopkins’ School of Advanced International Studies. He also serves as a Senior Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford. Throughout his career, he has served as either editor or co-editor of more than 20 publications relating to Europe’s politics and political economy. He has also authored several books himself, including The Politics of Economic and Monetary Union (2002).
