Why have artists and cultures throughout time and place expressed an interest in creatures that do not exist? What are the reasons behind the creation of such fantastical and frightening figures? This gallery talk led by graduate student lecturer, Alex Yen, explores works from Ancient Egypt, Greece, Asia, and even 20th century America. We will ask the questions: How does an artist create a monster? What is its use? We will look closely at a few objects in the MFA all related to this theme and these ideas.
