A genre first popularized in the Netherlands in the 1600’s, the tradition of still-life painting has fascinated artists and viewers for centuries. Through stark renderings of everyday objects and decadent displays of luxury goods, artists explored themes such as human mortality and morality, conducted encyclopedic studies of nature, and experimented with painting technique to produce works of remarkable clarity and detail. Join graduate student lecturer Rachel Kase as we examine four centuries of still-life painting in the collection of the MFA.
