In an election year, join in an open conversation around “nationhood” in the United States. Starting with a focused look at “Sweet Land of Liberty,” a large banner-like assemblage of decommissioned fire hoses by Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates, we can consider “liberties” of representation, assembly, protection under the law, the vote, and more, from the era of Civil Rights Protests through to the present. All perspectives welcome in this discussion with Jen Mergel, Beal Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art.
