The acclaimed documentary film Brief Tender Light is about how a teenager matures into adulthood through the college experience – how what they know and believe about themselves and the world are tested and refined by collisions with new ideas, people, and experiences. While centering the lives of Black youth at an iconic institution to make such institutions more accessible in the imaginations of youths everywhere, the film also offers a critical examination of the promise and the reality of the African international student experience in America. Can Africa count on its youths studying abroad to catalyze progress on the continent? Or are American colleges fueling a modern-day extraction of human capital from the African continent?
