The Arts

Hyman Bloom merged earth and spirit, never abandoning the physicality of the world while considering its deeper meanings. Join Erica Hirshler, Croll Senior Curator of Paintings and exhibition curator, to learn about some of Bloom’s most compelling works—his paintings of archeological excavations, human corpses and anatomies, and his masterful drawings—which illuminate the artist’s constant interest in the body and the ultimate meaning of “still life.” The paintings, gripping and beautiful, speak to our basic human desire to find beauty and meaning even within death and decay. Simultaneously physical and mystical, painted with active strokes of jewellike color, Bloom’s work is radiant with life.
