Karen Haas, Lane Curator of Photographs
Explore the work of five contemporary photographers who share a fascination with magic, fantasy and illusion with exhibition curator Karen Haas, Lane Curator of Photographs. Each artist uses meticulously staged imagery to grapple with contemporary social issues—from the role of women in the Middle East, to the passage from childhood to adolescence, to global warming and climate change. All use photography—seen as the most literal and “truthful” of artistic media, even in the digital age—to lure us into believing what we see before us, as we gradually come to realize that the photographs are not always what they seem.
