The Arts

Explore the concepts and ideas behind the abstract works by women on view in Gallery 336 of “Women Take the Floor,” with contemporary artist Jo Ann Rothschild. Rothschild works with paint, ink, canvas, and paper and demonstrates how she creates paintings, decision by decision. She invites visitors to experiment with color and line, stressing “once you make a mark, you will have a place to begin.” Afterwards, visit Gallery 336, “Women and Abstraction at Midcentury” with a new understanding of abstract art.

Jo Ann Rothschild has been painting for more than fifty years and has exhibited both here and abroad. She was the first recipient of the MFA’s Maud Morgan Purchase Prize as well as a fellowship recipient in painting from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Exhibitions have included: a retrospective at the National Theatre Building in Havana, one person exhibitions at the Painting Center in New York City, HallSpace and Massasoit Community College in Massachusetts. She has taught at Tufts University and UMass Boston and founded the art program at Pine Street Inn, where she taught for 11 years.
