Join painter Mark Steele in a demonstration exploring movement, line, composition, and color as inspired by Toulouse-Lautrec. Observe quick gestural painting and dynamic color and composition, an approach mastered by Lautrec as he depicted the performers and characters of the Parisian nightlife in his famous posters. With the help of a live model dressed in the Parisian style of the 1890s, Steele creates poster images drawn from music, theater, and dance. Afterward, visit “Toulouse-Lautrec and the Stars of Paris” in the Gund Gallery, LG31, with a new understanding of Lautrec’s work.
Mark Steele is well known in Boston as a painter, illustrator, and sculptor. Along with solo and group exhibitions of his fine art, his unique style has been seen in numerous illustrations and covers for The New York Times, The Atlantic, Harvard Magazine, and others, along with many original posters created for an annual Artists’ Ball in the South End, many of which will be on display. Steele also teaches at Lesley Art and Design and is a graduate of Boston University.
