The Arts

Join Darcy Kuronen, Pappalardo Curator of Musical Instruments, for a look at how musical instruments were designed and marketed for playing music at home during the 1800s. Amateurs of the era craved the opportunity to play an instrument, and types were produced that were relatively easy to play, offering immediate gratification without time-consuming lessons from a music master. These included flageolets, mouth organs, a variety of hybrid plucked string instruments, and even musical glasses. Kuronen discusses and provides live demonstrations on several instruments.
