Explore the beauty and splendor of high-society 18th-century European fashion. Jay Calderin, sketchpad in hand, demonstrates how the clothes in the exhibition “Casanova’s Europe: Art, Pleasure, and Power in the 18th Century” can be a source of inspiration in contemporary fashion design.
Visitors are invited to be a part of the drawing and design process in this interactive session. After reviewing a selection of images of these lavish garments, Calderin demonstrates how to draw many of the characteristic elements of the period and then, with the help of visitors, illustrates how they might be translated into fashions that could be worn today.
Jay Calderin is the founder of Boston Fashion Week and the author of three books on fashion, including What They Didn’t Teach You in Fashion School and The Fashion Design Reference & Specification Book. He is the director of Creative Marketing and an instructor at the School of Fashion Design in Boston. Calderin also teaches workshops and classes at the MFA.
