American Folk Artist: J.O.J. Frost 11:30 am and 2:30 pm J.O.J. Frost’s work is recognized as a significant part of American folk art, and is represented in major folk art collections. Much of his subject matter was scenes from Marblehead history, as well as pictures of the town as he remembered it from boyhood. Pam Peterson, former Executive Director of the Marblehead Historical Society, leads this talk.

How will history remember your name? 12:15 and 1:45 pm Learn more about a rare 18th-century blanket chest made for Esther Lyman, a young woman from Northampton, Mass. Decorated using a series of motifs and designs, this chest makes a powerful statement about female ownership, taste and identity in early New England. Lan Morgan, PEM Assistant Curator for Exhibitions and Research, leads this talk.

Marblehead Pottery 1 and 3:15 pm This hand-crafted pottery is among the most prized examples of the Arts and Crafts design movement in America in the early 1900s. The pieces in the Lynch Collection illustrate the variety of beautiful shapes, colors and design motifs to be found in the pottery’s production. Pam Peterson, former Executive Director of the Marblehead Historical Society, leads this talk.

DEMONSTRATION Furniture Making 10 am–4:30 pm | Atrium Philip C. Lowe, founder of the Furniture Institute of Massachusetts, demonstrates woodworking techniques used by some of the artists included in the exhibition. The master furniture maker covers techniques including carving, joinery, inlay, planning and veneering.

FILM Classic Maria Martinez: Native American Pottery Maker of San Ildefonso 11 am–noon | Morse Auditorium One of the great figures in modern pottery and crafts, Maria Montoya Martinez (San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico), along with her husband, Julian, perfected the magnificent burnished black ware that is prized by collectors and museums around the world. Their pieces reflect the Pueblo people’s legacy of fine artwork and crafts. This film reveals Martinez’s technique, as well as the talent, expertise and love that went into each pot she created.

DROP-IN ART MAKING Inspirations from Your Town Noon–4 pm | Atrium Create an original piece of artwork highlighting your hometown inspired by fanciful paintings from Marblehead artist J.O.J. Frost. Let your imagination run free as you imagine your own scene, landscape or colorful design to take home.

Hands-on Pottery with Kirsten Bassion 1–4 pm | Studio 1, Create Space Kirsten Bassion, owner and teacher of the Clay School in Lynn, shares her love of clay. Roll up your sleeves and prepare to get messy as Bassion teaches you how to pinch or coil figures and designs with clay.
