The Arts

The MFA’s collection of ancient Egyptian art came to the Museum from a variety of sources, which reflect in many ways the history of Egyptology. Denise Doxey, curator, Ancient Egyptian, Nubian, and Near Eastern Art traces the history of the collection, from early 19th-century adventurers into the 21st century. Along the way, meet some of the colorful characters involved. Their experiences reflect developments in the world around them: the decline of landed aristocracy in Britain, the rise of American manufacturing, the birth of scientific archeology, changing dynamics in the Middle East, and the current commitment to protecting cultural patrimony.
